L’Academy premia Moonlight come Miglior film dell’anno. Il film drammatico di Barry Jenkins la spunta sugli altri concorrenti in gara, nonostante l’erroneo annuncio di Faye Dunaway che avrebbe consegnato l’Oscar al diretto rivale, La La Land. Moonlight conquista altre due statuette importanti, quella del Migliore attore non protagonista per Mahershala Ali e quella per la Miglior sceneggiatura non originale.
Il grande favorito della serata La La Land si porta a casa solo sei premi, tra cui Miglior regia per Damien Chazelle e Miglior attrice protagonista per Emma Stone. Tra gli altri vincitori Casey Affleck e Viola Davis per i loro ruoli in Manchester by the Sea (che si aggiudica anche l’Oscar per la Migliore sceneggiatura originale) e Fences.
OJ: Made in America vince come Miglior Documentario, mentre Zootopia conquista la statuetta per il Miglior film d’animazione. Tra i Film stranieri conquista il premio The Salesman.
